World War II veteran Rodney Chapman served in France in the U.S. Army. He spent seven months and 22 days in a German POW camp. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. ©Nate Guidry

Harry Mistrik holds a bayonet he took off a German POW during World War II. As a combat engineer, Mr. Mistrik was part of the first wave to land at Omaha Beach on D-Day with the Army's 1st Infantry Division. He was assigned the task of blowing up barbed wire barriers by using Bangalore torpedoes, thus creating openings for Americans to pass through. He also served in the Philippines. Mr. Mistrik earned five battle stars for combat, four from Europe and one in the Pacific. ©Nate Guidry

World War II veteran Guy Prestia fought across Europe as a gunner in the U.S. Army's 45th Infantry Division . Mr. Prestia saw heavy combat during the Italian campaign in Sicily, Salerno, Cassino and Anzio, then pushed into France and into Germany. His division suffered 63,000 casualties and at the end liberated Dachau, the first concentration camp established by the Nazi regime, on April 29, 1945. ©Nate Guidry

WWII veteran Norman Rosfeld was a radio operator aboard a B-29 heavy bomber. He was part of the final mission of WWII, on Aug. 14, 1945, a daylight raid of a naval arsenal outside Nagoya, Japan. On the way back to the base, the crew got word that the war was over. ©Nate Guidry

WWII veteran Julia Parsons was part of an all-women’s German code-breaking team during the war. After graduating from Carnegie Tech in 1942, Mrs. Parson trained at Smith College in Massachusetts. She was later sent to Washington, D.C., where her job was to decipher codes sent through the Enigma machine. ©Nate Guidry

World War II veteran Henry Parham at his home in 2018. On D-Day, Mr. Parham waded ashore in deep water at Omaha Beach. He was in the third wave and spared the worst of the horror the first wave of infantry endured. Still, he spent more than two months on that beach with the 320th Barrage Balloon Battalion, the only black combat unit to serve at Normandy. In 2013, the French government awarded him the Legion of Honor, the highest military decoration in France. Mr. Parham passed at age 99 in 2021. ©Nate Guidry

Don Aliquo Sr., a retired high school music educator, grew up in Johnstown, playing alongside childhood friends such as trombonist Tommy Turk and iconic guitarist Joe Pass. He began his career as a singer and clarinet player, performing in dance bands in venues like the Elks, Eagles and Moose lodges. “That's how we got started.
